These bars have been out of production for over a decade and are exceedingly rare. Rhodium is one of six platinum group metals and along with osmium and iridium are the three rarest stable elements in the earth's crust with rhenium being the fourth. Rhodium was discovered by William Hyde Wollaston in 1803 and is used in jewelry fabrication, in nuclear reactors and electrical contacts, and as a catalyst in the automotive and chemical industries. The combination of its extreme rarity and important industrial uses have caused rhodium prices to swing wildly over the years. It hit a high of about $10,000 an ounce back in 2008 and made an absolute moonshot a few years back when it hit $29,800 an ounce in 2021. Who knows when the next rally will begin?
