Gold coin - 0.9675 troy ounces - .900 bullion
We are offering gold bullion from the United States Mint. This coin (also called the Coronet Gold Double Eagle) was designed by James B. Longacre and was minted from 1849 though 1907. The large amounts of gold bullion mined during the Western Amrican gold rushes during the mid and later 1800s made large scale production of these coins possible. Since that time they have become relatively rare after President Franklin Roosevelt signed Exective Order 6102 in 1933 making it illegal for Americans to posses/hoard monetary gold. This was later reversed by President Gerald Ford in 1974, but in the decades in between many millions of our gold coins were forcibly returned to the U.S. Treasury and melted down into gold bars and held as our nation's gold reserves of 8,134 metric tons, much of which is still purported to be held in Fort Knox.
Gold occurs naturally most often in its free elemental or native form and has thus been known and considered precious since ancient times and has been used in coinage, jewelry and art throughout recorded history. It is incredibly corrosion resistant, beautiful, malleable and ductile. It can be drawn into a monoatomic wire. Just one gram of gold can be formed into a semitransparent sheet of one square meter, and such forms strongly reflect infrarred light, thus useful in heat shields. It also has uses in electronics, medicine, photography and as a chemical catalyst. Most importantly it has been used as a store of value throughout history as gold coins have been used as currency for thousands of years until 1971 when the international gold standard was abandoned in favor of purely fiat currencies. It has been our premise since inception that there are many other rare metals that can also be effective stores of wealth, some of which are much more rare than gold, though none will likely ever dethrone king gold as the world's most monetary metal.
We have various years of Liberty Head Gold Double Eagles available, all in almost uncirculated (AU) condition and minted either at the Carson City, Denver, New Orleans, Philadelphia (no mint mark), or San Francisco Mints.
